Barolo & Barbaresco: reading the cru
The MGA system, and why the same grape speaks with a hundred accents.
Nebbiolo is a grape of extraordinary sensitivity. Move a few hundred metres along a ridge and the wine changes voice — more floral here, more austere there, broader or finer depending on soil and exposure.
The MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive) map of Barolo and Barbaresco puts names to these differences: the single vineyards, the crus, each with its own character. Walking them, glass in hand, is the clearest lesson in terroir I know.
We taste the same vintage from neighbouring crus and let the wines explain the hills better than any lecture could.
